THE PELHAM PUPPETS PUPPEDIA

For the child in us all

Helpful Hints

In your quest to find Pelham puppets you really need to know where to look. Ebay is by far the easiest place to buy them from but don't forget to look at toy fairs, car boot sales auction rooms,Pelham websites and also talk to people about your hobby. I have been really surprised how I have found wonderful puppets just through word of mouth.

Humbrol gloss paints are great for restoration work. They can be matched up to the original colours very well.

A glue gun is a must for sticking back bits of hair  felt or fur and for fixing cellophane back into boxes.

Oxiclean can be used to soak material in order to remove water marks or rusty stains.

If you iron out the creases in cotton clothing it gives a puppet a new lease of life.

If you are patient you can unpick the knots in original strings using a needle and save them to use again elsewhere.

Don't hang puppets in direct sunlight as the colours will fade.

Some faded colours on plain materials can be completely refreshed using a Dylon cold water dye.

If you look you can find beads that make a good match for missing buffers. You can buy the beads in the photograph from specialised haberdashery shops and if you cut a few mm of the wide end they are perfect.

A lot of the older puppets  metal parts go rusty as they are made of steel. This can damage the clothing especially at the top of the arms and on the busts of the girls where steel pins have been used. It is worth coating these metal  parts with a varnish to stop the rust rotting the materials away.

Making an Inventory

You may find it useful to number your puppets and keep an inventory on your computer because once your collection grows it can be very hard keeping track.

You can do this by using Microsoft Office Excel, which is a tool for making tables of information.  You can add any details you like to this document as well, such as whether the strings are original or the instructions are present or what type of box the puppet is in and so on. You can colour code as well.  This information can be invaluable when you are considering buying other puppets or even selling them as you will have all the details at your fingertips.  You can add or delete information as necessary.
